the dismal science

How Tiger throws off golf s incentive structure. It Takes a Village to fail to thank its female leader no matter how good she is. How Tiger throws off golf s incentive structure. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you re fired. Reward structures like this exist in reality as well as fiction. The motivating effect of incentives like this can cut either way however. Tiger is the player of his generation. The exempt players the top money winners who qualify automatically averaged to strokes under par. Tiger averaged between and strokes under par. Another way to measure Tiger s dominance is his world golf rating. Golfers receive rating points based on their performance in tournaments earning more points for higher finishes. The first place finisher in the U. Open gets points for example while the second place finisher gets . The world golf rating is a player s average points per tournament. The purse at PGA tournaments varies between mi! llion and million. The prizes for the top finishers are large but they fall sharply as you move down the leader board. First place gets percent of the purse . million at an million major second place gets . percent third place gets . percent and fourth gets . If money motivates then the prospect of winning the top prize should bring out extreme effort in golf. But when Tiger is playing and you re not Tiger you face a depressed prize schedule. If you assume Tiger is going to win then the top prize available to you is rather than . That beats the heck out of steak knives but it s significantly less than the winner s take. Second place among players who are not Tiger gets rather than and so on. How can we be sure this is because of Tiger A few features of the findings lend them plausibility. The effect is also stronger during Tiger s hot streaks when his competitors prospects are more clearly dimmed. When Tiger is on his competitors scores were elevated by nearly ! two strokes when he entered a tournament. They can study the course. They can hit more balls on the driving range. They can arrive at the tournament a few days early and play more practice rounds. Of course there are other possible explanations for the study s finding besides effort such as distraction or intimidation. Maybe other golfers are just intimidated when Tiger is playing. Or maybe they are put off by the media attention lavished on the PGA s premier player. But Brown s study suggests you might want to consider its effect on your other workers performance. Steak knives might not cut it as second prize. Field Maloney examined why golf beat tennis as America s favorite country club sport. Austin Goolsbee discovered that unique incentive structures made the buses run on time in Chile.

P2 movie

It's Christmas Eve: a time for curling up by the fire with family and friends; a day when even the most voracious corporate climbers generally head home by dinnertime. But not Angela. She's the last one left at the office, determined to close one more deal before the holiday. The long hours she keeps will have an impact, but not the kind she's been hoping for. When she gets down to the parking garage, she discovers her car won't start. The timing couldn't be worse; she's already late for Christmas Eve dinner with her family, the garage is deserted, and her cell phone doesn't get a signal underground. But then a friendly security guard comes along and offers to help. He flirtatiously invites her to stay and share a small Christmas dinner he's preparing in the parking office, but she laughs it off. Before she knows what's hit her, she's been knocked unconscious. When she wakes up, she's tied to a chair in the security guard's office. As it turns out, his dinner invitation was ! not optional--and it's going to involve a lot more than a meal. If Angela wants to live to see Christmas morning, she must find a way to escape from level P2 of the parking garage. (Summit Entertainment)

Motionsensing technology advances

Small Business Center A new resource for small businesses. Get expert advice forms and more. SFGate Technology It s a high tech world we just plug you into it. The movie is set in . Think of it as the next step after the Nintendo Wii only you are the Wii controller. The more natural the interface the broader the adoption and the more successful the experience. The company has signed a deal with Hilton Hotel and Resorts to install systems by this summer. The Reactrix system uses two sets of dual cameras that capture images in stereo much like our eyes do. In a real world setting the system will look like a regular digital sign in a mall. But as customers pass by at a distance the screen can draw their attention by mimicking their movements. As users get closer it can morph into an interactive advertisement game or information kiosk. Vincent said GestureTek has been at work on gesture based interfaces for years. He said early camera based systems basically! captured motion but weren t able to recognize D images. Newer systems like the AirPoint which will sell for about are precise enough to make motion control a reality. And now with the popularity of the Wii people are warming to the idea of motion control. The camera lets people turn small hand gestures into onscreen movements. A superfast shutter helps the camera eliminate objects more than feet away. This is really about immersion and personalization said Klier. You can have an avatar that puts you in any environment. We think this will change the way gaming happens. Apple iPod upgrade a nice Touch Chicago Tribune

Otherwise Apple s top of the line iPod is now thisclose to being the iPhone. The only things missing are the tools that require a cellular network. I have put several such applications on the Touch in addition to the new goodies from Apple. They include solitaire old habits Google mobile and direct links to several news sites. These devices have morphed beyond media playback. You can send e mail surf the Web and do practically anything you can on a computer. Also improvements were made to existing Touch programs to take better advantage of Wi Fi. The coolest feature is Maps and how it integrates with Contacts. It is not based on GPS so it works only when you are in a Wi Fi range. Another upgrade was to the Calendar program where you can add appointments directly. Ante up for upgrade I do have some issues with the Touch improvements however. Notably it is the first iPod software upgrade one must pay for. In a way this is akin to the price cut two months a! fter launching the iPhone. It s a great way to discover music. Find an Ibiza review at chicago tribune. For music fans with a large digital library who also want to watch movies gigabytes is not enough space. Movies and TV shows take up much more room than music. I ve had to keep music off the Touch in order to get videos on. I want a Touch with more storage. Second Wi Fi is a huge power drain. You will need to charge your device after two to three hours of Web use. A better battery is needed. Let s call it the smart iPod. com More articles Get chicagotribune. com news by e mail. Politics dont stop at workplace door SunSentinel

I don t think there should be a stifling effect in a workplace he says. and presidential candidates constantly in the news talking politics around the water cooler is inevitable. An employer should tread carefully. Discussing politics is more of a personal decision for employees as long as it doesn t interfere with work. Legally employers or managers can t elicit information about a worker s political affiliation she says. An employer can t hire or fire based on a worker s political affiliation or activities. Palm Beach County s ordinances prohibit certain discrimination against employees but don t specify political affiliation Weitz says. Still employers have rights in controlling their workplace and ensuring work is performed. For the employee talking politics with colleagues could cause workplace discomfort. Election issues really inflame people one way or another. When there s a discussion in the break room or hallway tensions can erupt Weitz says. NC! CI a provider of worker compensation insurance information had a long standing policy against displaying symbols at desks. After the terrorism attacks of Sept. some employees began displaying flags but were told to take them down. The company received a wave of bad publicity and Schrempf ultimately resigned under board pressure. Who hasn t had a political conversation in the last couple months she says. As for items on a desk our guidelines are good taste and non offensive Budd says. A boss also can be a role model for employees in community activism. He talks about politics a lot and we just join in the conversation says his office manager Hazell Cardentey. We always have little debates going on. At least they ve taken it off the menu on their web site. They had the blonde and on the menu but only had the blonde while we were there. The bartender s advice was that first you drive a Volkswagen then a Volvo and finally a Jaguar. I m glad my wife talked me in to the blonde instead. My impressions presented in a Westveleteren glass and poured by the bartender. Frosty white head that settles down fairly quickly with just a little bit of lacing. A small bit of head remained throughout. Serving temperature was about degrees. Had a slight lemony smell a very smooth initial taste that was light and slightly sweet. Finish was slightly citrus y. paid at the Belgo Bar for .

2007 BMW 6 Series

Introduction The BMW 650i returns for 2007 all but unchanged from 2006. It delivers excellent performance, brilliant handling and that arrow-like stability that defines BMW. Available in coupe and convertible body styles, the BMW 650i is a premium grand touring car. It comes with a 360-hp V8 and a choice of three transmissions. Changes to the 650i for 2007 are few, mostly limited to creature comforts, including an iPod interface, optional Pearl leather upholstery and other leather accents. New also is a tire pressure monitor that warns the driver when a tire begins to lose air. The BMW M6 Coupe, introduced late in the 2006 model year, returns for 2007. The M6 boasts a 500-hp V10, seven-speed sequential gearbox, M-tuned suspension and electronic stability control, special wheels, Z-rated tires, and distinctive interior and exterior styling. New for 2007 is the M6 Convertible, a first in the long and storied history of 6 Series BMWs. Like the 650i Convertible, the M6 Convertible is identical to its coupe counterpart, other than the one-button, powered folding top. For 2007, the M6 gets a tire pressure monitor. Late-model 2007 M6s will be available with a six-speed manual transmission as a no-cost alternative to the standard seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox. The SMG substitutes an electronically operated clutch for the regular clutch pedal, and we don't love it. We recommend getting the six-speed manual. Both coupes and convertibles have a back seat that can fit small people in a pinch, but are really intended to move two people and their belongings in high comfort, style and safety. The 650i is more luxurious than the Z4, and delivers higher performance, more agility and sportier styling than the 5 Series sports sedans. The M6 sacrifices some of the Grand Touring comforts of the 650i in favor of a more aggressive handling package and stratospheric acceleration performance. At the same time, the M6, and especially its sequential manual transmission, takes the marque in a direction purists find distressing, increasingly transferring control of the car from its driver to its super-sophisticated electronics. More generally, and more generously, BMW's corporate design themes, panned by many in recent years, seem to fit better on the long, low 6 Series. And an intricate top design blesses the convertible with the same, nicely integrated, fastback-like profile as the coupe. Model Lineup The 2007 BMW 6 Series comes in four distinct forms: the 650i Coupe ($73,900), the 650i Convertible ($80,900), the M6 Coupe ($98,600), and the M6 Convertible ($104,400). BMW 650i models are powered a 360-hp, 4.8-liter V8. Three transmissions are offered: a six-speed manual, a six-speed sequential manual gearbox with electronically operated clutch and shifting, and a six-speed automatic with Steptronic semi-manual shifting. M6 models feature a 500-hp, 5.0-liter V10 with a seven-speed sequential manual gearbox. A six-speed manual is in the middle of the model year. All 6 Series models come loaded with leather upholstery; a choice of interior trim; dual-zone automatic climate control with air cleaner; a high-power, eight-speaker stereo; xenon adaptive headlamps; moonroof; auto-dim mirrors inside and out; and BMW's Park Distance Control for front and rear. The 650i Convertible offers a choice of black or gray tops. New for 2007 is an auxiliary input for iPods and MP3 players; and a dealer-installed iPod interface is available. A four-year subscription to Real Time Traffic information is standard. Options for 650i models include the Cold Weather Package ($750) with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a ski bag pass-through from the trunk. The Sport Package ($1,800) adds sport seats and 19-inch wheels with high performance run-flat tires. Also available: Active Steering ($1,250), radar-managed Active Cruise Control ($2,200), head-up display ($1000), night vision ($2200), Logic7 sound system with DSP and simulated surround sound ($1200), HD radio ($500), satellite radio with one-year trial subscription ($595), Comfort Access keyless unlock and engine start and stop ($1000), heated front seats ($500), and pearl leather upholstery ($1350). Options on the M6 models are limited to the head-up display, Comfort Access, HD radio, satellite radio, black carbon fiber interior trim ($300) and Merino full leather upholstery with suede-like, Alcantara roofliner ($3500). Safety features start with multi-stage front airbags and front seat-mounted side-impact airbags. Coupes are equipped with curtain-style head protection airbags, while Convertibles have automatic rollover protection that deploys high strength roll hoops behind the rear seats. Rear seats have LATCH child safety seat hooks and anchors. Accident avoidance features that come standard include electronic stability control; ABS with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. BMW Assist telematics, with automatic collision notification, an SOS button and roadside assistance comes standard, including a four-year subscription. Tire pressure monitors come standard along with a really cool first-aid kit.

In August Rice filed a lawsuit against Lohan for emotional distress. The suit seeks unspecified damages and payment of medical and other expenses related to emotional distress. Calls to Lohan s attorneys after business hours Tuesday were not immediately returned. Lohan served minutes in jail on Nov. as part of a plea deal on misdemeanor drunken driving and cocaine possession charges. because it owns the vehicle she was driving. Zandberg

Zandberg

Zandberg is situated in the heart of red wine country, that is, amongst the rolling hills and breathtaking vistas just outside Stellenbosch. The cooling winds that hail from False Bay allow unique flavour characteristics to be embodied in our fine wines. Zandberg wines stand their own ground and have received gold and double gold awards at national and international wine shows. The owner is a firm believer in quality and has assembled a powerful team of wine experts.
Anton Bredell, a sixth generation winemaker, completed his wine studies in 1977 and graduated from the well known Elsenburg. He then began winemaking at his Grandfather’s cellar built in 1925 which to this day follows the original design and architecture. Today he proudly takes his place as Zandberg’s wine maker.
Basil Moss. You may say that you have never heard of him, but as a consumer of South African wines you would have drunk the “the fruits of his labour”. He is our hands on viticulturist and has a unique relationship and history with Zandberg.
Zandberg offers Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay cultivars. All of which are tentatively monitored from the vineyard, all the way into the bottles. Zandberg is fast securing its place amongst the most prestigious estates where quality, passion and true understanding come to fruition in their fine wines.

Calling cards Terminate

Order at&t calling cards? In fact there are numerous matters to scan when you choose international phone card: – Calling cards Terminate. In the main this launches with the first use. You can make calls up to the value available on the phone card before you attain the shelf life. Often all surplus time is lost when the card stops working. (This is not always the case and on several prepaid cards lost time can be recovered by renewing the calling card) – Billing Increments. This is the least phone call duration and the advance manipulated to tally the phone call price. – Rounding up. Lacking time advance is on all occasions rounded off to the succeeding maximum time unit. – Don\'t get caught by the Connection Fee. This is talked over in former section. For the sake of completeness calling cards that have a discount every minute phone rate often have a very costly telephone connection charge . Making short duration calls with this type of card can turn into extremely costly with Australia call card. It is better to use this type of prepaid card to make long duration phone calls particularly to Africa. – Search for if there exists a supply payment. Telephone cards come in three combinations: -- Real slim calling card -- Actual material pre paid phone card and an e-mail Pincode -- personal code only virtual (no actual card) – Investigate if there are payments in the business. On occasion there encounters a financial tax – i.e. if you are buying a $10 phone card there is no sense in paying a $10 extra for the advantage of paying for call card by Visa card. Do not buy affordable phone cards if they charge you for buying it. It is just not worth it.

Bed

This feels like the best course at the worst of times and a pleasant diversion at the best. Thus far I can see little reason not to save that no one else seems to feel the same. The last thing I need is another reason to be abnormal. Or maybe the last thing I need is to worry about it. I venture upstairs to find a flock of stoners toshing about. I have mixed feelings about this. On the other I despise them for the ease of their existence. The work isn t what is killing me nor the effort. It s the temptation to be less than I want battling the urge to do more than just be. Perhaps I ll slip into something more comfortable.

LSUaposs Pittman Makes Up for Lost Time

I m just thanking God for the opportunity and really taking advantage of the opportunity. This doesn t happen at all to a lot of people two national championships. Back then he was a seldom used reserve. His sophomore season he saw more action and started one game. It had to be surgically ground out Miles recalled costing Pittman his junior season. At the end of the first day however he came off a block and felt a pop. His Achilles tendon had torn. There went another year. and you get another letdown like that Pittman said. It takes a toll on you mentally. There was an additional side benefit. He used his music as therapy but never allowed it to interfere with his rehab. Football still came first. I just play football. Pittman grew up in Garyville La. a town about halfway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. He was widely recruited coming out of East St. John High School and seriously considered playing at Michigan. His mother Emma a minister who a! lso runs a deli in St. Rose was happy he was close to home following his injuries. The second he was really down in spirit and I prayed him through. I told him to stay focused. Now he s older wiser stronger more mature. He s healthy and it s like he lost nothing. It was a setback that set him up for a great comeback and he has come back stronger. It s an amazing story Miles said. To miss two full seasons due to injury . the likelihood of him playing this season was small and the likelihood of him having a great year less. I can t tell you how happy I am for him how it was important for him to persevere. There isn t any question. If approved that would allow the foot pound senior to come back once more. I have family not too far away. That would be real nice. And the Saints sure do need help on defense. Share your thoughts on this story. be the first to share your thoughts on this question.

QA McAfee Symantec CEOs talk security InfoWorld via Yahoo News

Certainly that s been the case in the more traditional security technologies. David DeWalt McAfee Actually see it as a huge advantage to being a big company. Adding another endpoint agent from a small company versus going with McAfee isn t as attractive to these customers. We offer cost optimization centralized management and other benefits that you can t get from smaller companies. The reality in the security world today is that we are seeing more cost optimization requirements. DLP over time might become part of a broader digital rights management strategy for an organization. DeWalt McAfee and Symantec have clearly addressed DLP in very different ways. We believe that most DLP events occur through insiders through endpoint devices. If you can address those two problems you can address the bulk of the issues on the marketplace. What we have compared to Vontu is apples to hubcaps literally entirely different technologies. Vontu is primarily a network gate! way appliance that is matching rules. There s no host to classify content but primarily an appliance to look and monitor for data loss. That s a totally different thing than Safeboot which is whole disk encryption for mobile devices. Symantec has no encryption technology in its entire portfolio so the technologies are not even in the same hemisphere. Symantec bet that monitoring network traffic is the future. We bet that doing it at the endpoint is more of a safe compliant way to address this. Symantec could be right too maybe were both right because it s not like Vontu is doing poorly either. We already have the versions of our products in marketplace. Is there any innovation in there at all We certainly think so. That s all about innovation. Consider all that in backdrop of the idea that the whole software industry is consolidating around us. You cannot ignore the broader macro trend going on in the industry itself. DeWalt It s a myth that companies our size d! on t innovate. Many products are being made almost one hundred percent in house. Lots of the work in our new consumer technologies was an organic exercise as with ePolicy Orchestrator. But we also have to use the balance sheet and acquisitions because we can. It gives us the opportunity to grow. It is a combination and we have to be good at balancing both things. Companies like McAfee have gotten mature because they re good at development and acquisition. Innovation is coming from Beaverton Ore. and elsewhere where core development and Avert Labs sit. In reality the core of this company is focused on nothing but innovation. There s also the issue of heterogeneity. DeWalt One word describes our differentiation from these companies heterogeneity. Large companies want freedom of choice of any platform with any OS with any technology. We bet that the cross platform approach wins out. To support all is better than just supporting one vendor whether for storage the OS or routers. Cisco is not exactly supporting Juniper anymore. Save ! On Special Offers. I haven't gotten anything done for a while. Pfft. Nothing seems important, but I don't care. I just don't have much to say lately. My life's been completely unremarkable these days.
