FOXBORO While rookie linebackers Jerod Mayo and Shawn Crable received most of the accolades following the Patriots loss to the Baltimore Ravens in their preseason opener Thursday night at Gillette Stadium the efforts of third year linebacker Pierre Woods shouldn t go overlooked. Woods who played most of the game in Mike Vrabel s usual spot at ! left outside linebacker set the edge and had the upper hand in most of his battles against tight ends and tackles. Most impressive was his fourth quarter strip sack of rookie quarterback Joe Flacco and ensuing fumble recovery. Known largely for his special teams play last year he led the team with special teams tackles Woods is trying to finally break in on the linebacker rotation and make an impact on defense. The whole offseason I was up here for almost the entire year working out and working hard Woods said after Thursday s game. I will continue to do the things I m supposed to do to become a better linebacker and hopefully it will pay off. Coach Bill Belichick called Woods one of our hardest working kids. I think he has improved every year. Woods meanwhile could certainly relate to how rookies like Mayo and Crable felt playing their first NFL game. I think everyone is nervous their first game Woods said. I was nervous my first game. It is the NFL not college anymore. In! college you have a little bit more fun and time on your hands and here it s work work work. You got to do your job and know what you re supposed to do and pay attention to detail. Bill on Brett During a conference call yesterday Belichick was asked his thoughts on the rival New York Jets landing quarterback Brett Favre. He s a great player one of the best in the last couple decades. He s got just about every record you could have at the position he plays Belichick said. His resume speaks for itself. It s always a big challenge playing the Jets even more so now. They ve got a lot of talent. I m sure we ll have our hands full every time we face them. But right now that s not at the forefront of our concerns. We have a lot of things before we even come to that. And that s what we ll focus on. But he s a great player there s no question about that. The Pats play the Jets on the road in Week Sept. . A hot read While no quarterback lit up the stat sheet against the Ravens evaluation is often based on doing the most with what s presented. In that wa! y rookie Kevin O Connell for yards interception scored some points as he scrambled out of trouble and moved well out of the pocket to avoid the pass rush. I m sure Kevin learned a lot last night Belichick said. I m sure the next time he gets an opportunity to play he ll try to take some of the experiences he had and build on them and eliminate some of the mistakes. That s something we really want to see going forward how players adjust and hopefully improve. Added O Connell after the game It is definitely a new experience but I was prepared to play well by the coaches. I just wanted to go out and execute what I was taught and get the ball in the hands of our athletes out there. Tossing it away The Pats opted to defer the opening coin toss to the second half a decision made possible by a new league rule this season. According to Belichick that will likely be the team s plan of action going forward. I think it will be a regular occurrence and it will probably be what most tea! ms do he said. The college coaches I ve talked to have pretty much told me that everyone pretty much defers when they win the toss in college it s like percent of the time. My guess is that it will approach that in the NFL as well in time . . . it would take some type of extreme conditions or an unusual experience to not do that if you win the toss. That s our approach going into it. Read the Patriots Point After at bostonherald.com. kguregianbostonherald.com. Read the Patriots Point After at bostonherald.com.
