The Iowa Board of Education has ordered the district which has students to close at the end of June. The board cited financial problems which has left the district unable to provide students with a first rate education. The seniors at Russell High School will be the district s last graduating class. Next fall students will moved to schools in Chariton Wayne County and Albia. State law allows officials to investigate cash strapped schools and shut them down if necessary. Russell is the th smallest district in the state. Many districts have consolidated over the past few decades but Russell is the first to be forced to close since Hedrick in .
